A Letter to Our Liberian Students Abroad
Carry Mama Liberia in your heart, protect each other, and return stronger.
🇱🇷 Before You Go, Remember This 🇱🇷
You are not just a student. You are an ambassador. You carry the hopes of your family, your community, and a nation that believes in you. Liberia, the land of the free, the first republic in Africa, the country founded by freed slaves who dreamed of a homeland, is counting on you. LinkAfric Inc. (founded 2023, Monrovia) stands with you every step of the way.
Wherever you go, you are Liberian. That is your strength, your identity, and your legacy.
🇱🇷 The Liberia We Carry With Us
Before we talk about challenges abroad, let us remember what makes our homeland so special. Let us never forget the beauty that shaped us.
Our Coastline
From Robertsport to Buchanan, our beaches are among the most beautiful in West Africa.
Sapo National Forest
Home to pygmy hippos, chimpanzees, and the resilience of nature that mirrors our own.
Providence Island
Where freed American slaves first settled in 1822. The birthplace of our nation.
Our Music & Culture
Liberian music carries our stories, our joy, and our pain.
Our Hospitality
"You're welcome" isn't just words; it's an invitation, a reflection of who we are.
Our Resilience
We survived civil war, Ebola, and every challenge. That strength runs in your blood.
⚠️ What Awaits You Abroad
Studying abroad is an incredible opportunity, but it comes with challenges. Being honest about them prepares you to face them with strength and grace.
✊🏿 Racism: A Reality We Must Face
In many countries abroad, you will experience racism. It may be subtle or overt. As Liberians, as Africans, we must prepare our young people for the truth.
What you need to know: It is not your fault. You are not alone. Your worth is not diminished. Know your rights. Protect your mental health.
Remember: You carry the strength of ancestors who survived the Middle Passage and built the first Black republic.
🏠 Homesickness & Loneliness
There will be nights you miss Liberian food and your mother's voice. Stay connected with family and find African communities abroad.
💰 Financial Pressure
Create a budget. Find legal part-time work. Remember that investing in your education is investing in your family's future.
📚 Academic & Cultural Adjustment
Use university resources: tutoring centers, writing labs, and academic advisors. You are adapting, not falling behind.
We Must Look Out For Each Other
- Connect before you go. Join Liberian student associations at your university.
- Be the welcoming face. When new Liberian students arrive, reach out.
- Share resources. Good landlords, job openings, supportive professors — share the information.
- Check on each other. A simple text: "How are you really doing?" can save a life.
- Celebrate together. Independence Day, Liberian Thanksgiving. Cook Liberian food. Play Liberian music.
- Stand up for each other. If you see a fellow Liberian struggling, don't look away.
🇱🇷 A Special Word on Solidarity 🇱🇷
If you experience racism or hardship, find your people. Connect with other African students. Build a circle of support. Document and report incidents when safe. Protect your peace. You are Liberian — from the land of the free. No comment can diminish that legacy.
Coming Home to Mama Liberia
"Whatever you gain abroad, bring it back to Liberia."
Bring your knowledge, skills, connections, and passion. Liberia needs you. Not someday — now.
You are not leaving Liberia behind. You are going to fetch water for the tree. Come back and water the roots.
To every Liberian student preparing to go abroad:
You are enough. You are capable. You are worthy of every opportunity you pursue.
Go. Learn. Grow. Make us proud. And when you are ready, come home. Mama Liberia is waiting.
